The claim that houseplants purify indoor air is one of the most widely repeated ideas in home wellness — and one of the most misunderstood. What the NASA Study Tested
The study placed individual plants inside sealed growth chambers — small, airtight enclosures — and exposed them to specific VOCs (benzene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde) at concentrations far higher than those found in typical homes. Under those conditions, some plant species removed measurable amounts of specific VOCs over 24-hour periods. The finding was real and valid for the experimental conditions tested.
Why It Does Not Apply to Your Home
The critical difference is the experimental setting versus a real room. A sealed chamber with no air circulation bears no resemblance to a room where air moves continuously through normal ventilation, windows, and door gaps. A small incandescent bulb inside a salt lamp does not produce enough heat to generate measurable ion output at room conditions. No published, peer-reviewed study has demonstrated measurable air purification from Himalayan salt lamps under realistic room conditions. The sole documented effect is the visual warmth of the glow.
Beeswax Candles
Beeswax candles are sometimes claimed to produce negative ions that clean the air. The more significant reality is that any combustion source — including beeswax — produces carbon monoxide, particulate matter (soot), and other combustion byproducts. For individuals concerned about indoor air quality, adding a combustion source is counterproductive. Candles increase PM2.5 levels in the room while burning, and residual soot settles on surfaces. Whatever marginal ion production might occur is outweighed by the particle and chemical load from the flame. Beeswax candles are not an air purification tool.
Bamboo Charcoal Bags (Activated Charcoal)
Bamboo charcoal bags contain porous activated carbon material — the same fundamental adsorption chemistry used in the carbon filter stage of multi-stage air purifiers. The difference is delivery: a charcoal bag relies on passive diffusion rather than a fan forcing air through the media. Odor molecules must passively contact the bag surface to be adsorbed. In practice, this means charcoal bags provide some odor adsorption in the immediate vicinity of the bag — useful for a small enclosed space like a drawer, shoe cabinet, or car interior. They produce no room-scale air quality impact because there is no mechanism to move room air through the media. They are not a room-scale solution.
Essential Oil Diffusers
Essential oil diffusers aerosolize plant-derived compounds into the air. Some essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, thyme) have demonstrated antimicrobial properties in laboratory settings at high concentrations. In a diffused room-air context, concentrations are orders of magnitude lower. More relevantly, diffusers add chemical compounds — terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes — to room air.
