Our Air Purifier Review Methodology

Step 1: AHAM Database Verification

The first thing we check for any air purifier is whether its CADR appears in the AHAM Verified CADR Database. AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) operates an independent testing program where air purifiers are tested under controlled laboratory conditions by a third party. The resulting CADR numbers — measured in cubic feet per minute for smoke, dust and pollen — are published in their public database.

If a purifier is listed in the AHAM database, we use those verified numbers. If it is not listed, we note this clearly on the page and treat any CADR claims as manufacturer self-reported data. Self-reported CADR may or may not be accurate — there is no way to verify it without independent testing.

Brands like Coway, Winix, Levoit (select models) and Blueair submit to AHAM. Brands like Shark and Dyson do not, or do so only for select models. This does not automatically mean their numbers are wrong, but it does mean you are taking their word for it.

We consider AHAM verification a significant trust signal. Two purifiers with similar claimed CADR are not equal if one is verified and the other is not.

Step 2: HEPA Grade Verification

Not all HEPA is the same. The term HEPA covers multiple grades with different filtration efficiencies:

  • H11: 95% efficiency at 0.3 microns. Acceptable for general air cleaning.
  • H12: 99.5% efficiency at 0.3 microns. Good performance.
  • H13: 99.97% efficiency at 0.3 microns. True HEPA. Medical and clean room grade.
  • H14: 99.995% efficiency. Hospital-grade. Rarely found in consumer purifiers.

Critically, terms like "HEPA-type," "HEPA-like" and "HEPA-style" are NOT regulated. They mean nothing. A filter labeled "HEPA-type" can have 60% efficiency and legally use that label. We flag these labels clearly and advise against buying purifiers that use them.

We verify HEPA grade through AHAM data, manufacturer specification sheets and, when available, independent filter test reports. If a brand markets "True HEPA" without third-party verification, we note the discrepancy — as happened with the Levoit labeling challenge in 2024.

Step 3: Certification Verification

We check three key certifications for every purifier we review:

CARB Certification. The California Air Resources Board requires all air purifiers sold in California to produce less than 0.050 ppm of ozone — the EPA safe threshold. We verify each product against the CARB Air Cleaner Directory. Products with ionizers or UV-C emitters must pass this test. A CARB-listed product is confirmed safe by an independent regulator.

Energy Star. We check for Energy Star certification where applicable, though it is less critical for air purifiers than for HVAC equipment.

UL/ETL Listing. Electrical safety certification. All purifiers sold through major US retailers should carry UL or ETL marks. We note if a product lacks standard safety certification.

Step 4: Filter Cost Modeling

The purchase price of an air purifier is often less than half the total cost of ownership. Filter replacements add $25-140 per year depending on the brand and model. We calculate the 5-year total cost for every purifier we recommend:

5-Year Cost = Purchase Price + (Annual Filter Cost x 5)

This calculation reveals important truths that purchase price alone hides. For example:

  • Levoit Core 300: $80 + ($35 x 5) = $255 over 5 years
  • Coway AP-1512HH: $120 + ($40 x 5) = $320 over 5 years
  • Dyson TP07: $500 + ($70 x 5) = $850 over 5 years
  • Shark NeverChange: $200 + ($0 x 5) = $200 over 5 years

The Shark NeverChange, despite a higher purchase price than the Levoit, is the cheapest to own over five years because of zero filter costs. The Dyson costs 3-4x more than any competitor over five years. These numbers matter for long-term buyers.

Step 5: Customer Review Analysis

We analyze 500+ customer reviews per product across Amazon, retailer sites and community forums. We focus on:

  • Long-term reviews (6+ months). Initial impressions are often positive. Problems emerge over time — motor noise increasing, filter seal degrading, auto mode sensor drifting. Long-term reviews reveal reliability.
  • Negative review patterns. A single 1-star review means nothing. Twenty 1-star reviews mentioning the same motor noise problem means something. We identify recurring complaint patterns.
  • Allergy sufferer feedback. Reviews from people who specifically bought for allergy relief carry extra weight in our allergy guides. Their experience directly answers the question "does this work for allergies?"
  • Pet owner feedback. Same principle — pet owners reporting on pet hair, dander and odor performance is more relevant than general reviews for our pet-specific recommendations.

We do not rely on star ratings. A 4.5-star average with 10,000 reviews and a 4.7-star average with 200 reviews are not directly comparable. We read the actual reviews and identify what matters.

Step 6: Contextual Scoring

Each product on PurifierBeast is scored on a 1-10 scale across 5 criteria. The criteria change depending on the page context because different use cases prioritize different qualities.

For example, the Coway AP-1512HH might score 9.8 for "Value for Money" on our brand review page but 9.0 for "Filter Cost for Allergy Use" on our allergy guide. The product is the same — the evaluation criteria differ because allergy sufferers replace filters more frequently.

This contextual approach prevents the common problem of "best overall" lists that are meaningless for specific use cases. A purifier that is best for a bedroom is not necessarily best for a kitchen. Our scores reflect the specific context of each page.

How is CADR tested by AHAM?
AHAM tests air purifiers in a sealed 1,008 cubic foot chamber under controlled conditions. The machine runs at its highest fan speed and particle reduction is measured for three particle types: smoke (0.09-1 micron), dust (0.5-3 microns) and pollen (5-11 microns). The resulting CADR number represents cubic feet of clean air delivered per minute. Testing follows the ANSI/AHAM AC-1 standard.
What is AHAM and why does independent verification matter?
AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) is an independent trade organization that operates a voluntary CADR certification program. Independent verification matters because manufacturer-claimed CADR numbers are self-reported and may be tested under non-standardized conditions. Why are Dyson and Shark not AHAM verified?
AHAM certification is voluntary. Dyson and Shark choose not to submit most models for independent CADR testing. This does not mean their machines do not work — it means their performance claims are self-reported and cannot be directly compared to AHAM-certified competitors with the same confidence. We note AHAM verification status on every product page.
How often do you update your reviews and scores?
We update reviews when manufacturers release new models, when AHAM publishes updated CADR data, when Amazon prices change significantly, or when owner review patterns shift. Beast Scores are recalculated with each update cycle. The last-updated date on each page reflects the most recent review.
What does HEPA-type or HEPA-like mean versus True HEPA?
True HEPA is defined by the US DOE standard: 99.97% particle capture efficiency at 0.3 microns. HEPA-type and HEPA-like are marketing terms with no standardized minimum performance requirement — manufacturers define them however they choose. We only recommend machines with True HEPA filtration or independently verified equivalent performance. HEPA-type and HEPA-like machines are flagged clearly on any page where they appear.
Why does Beast Score weight CADR more than noise or design?
Because air purification effectiveness — the only outcome that matters for air quality — is determined by CADR relative to room size. A quiet machine that delivers poor CADR in your room provides poor air quality regardless of how little noise it makes. Noise, energy cost and design are secondary factors that affect comfort and running cost, but CADR determines whether the machine actually cleans your air. We weight accordingly.
