Editorial Standards
Every recommendation on PurifierBeast is built on independently verifiable data, not brand relationships or paid placements. Our editorial standards are not aspirational — they are operational constraints that govern which products appear in our recommendations and how we write about them.
Data sources we use:
- AHAM Verified CADR Database. The official AHAM directory is our primary performance reference. Every CADR number we publish has been cross-referenced against this database. If a product is not listed — or if the manufacturer’s claimed CADR does not match the verified number — we note that discrepancy explicitly in the review.
- EN1822 HEPA grade standards. We verify HEPA filtration claims against the EN1822 grading system (H10 through H14) by cross-referencing manufacturer technical documentation and independent test reports where available. We distinguish True HEPA (H13, 99.95% at 0.3 microns) from HEPA-type and HEPA-like claims that meet no recognized standard.
- CARB Certification Database. We check California Air Resources Board certification for all featured products to confirm ozone output is below the 0.05 ppm safety threshold. Products that generate harmful ozone concentrations are not featured, regardless of their CADR performance.
- Energy Star Certification. We check the official Energy Star product database for efficiency ratings on products where energy consumption is relevant to the buying decision.
What we do not do:
- We do not accept payment for reviews or for inclusion in rankings. Manufacturers cannot pay to appear in our best-picks lists or to receive positive editorial treatment.
- We do not accept free products from manufacturers. Every product we evaluate is purchased or researched through publicly available data sources, not brand-provided samples.
- We do not run paid placements disguised as editorial content. Sponsored content, if any ever appears on this site, will be labeled clearly as such.
- We do not recommend products we would not buy with our own money. If a $120 purifier outperforms a $500 one on verified CADR per dollar — and it frequently does — we say so directly.
Our affiliate commission structure is the same for all products regardless of brand or price point. We have no financial incentive to favor one manufacturer over another, and our ranking methodology is documented publicly on our methodology page so readers can evaluate our scoring criteria independently.
Research Process
The PurifierBeast research process is designed to answer one question for each product: does this air purifier actually clean the air in the room it is sized for, and at what true annual cost? Everything in our evaluation flows from that question.
CADR Verification. The first step for any product evaluation is AHAM database lookup. We record all three CADR values (smoke, dust, pollen) where available and note which is lowest — we use the lowest value as the conservative performance baseline. We then calculate real-room performance for three room sizes: small (150 sq ft), medium (250 sq ft) and large (400 sq ft), expressing performance as both square footage coverage and air changes per hour at ceiling height assumptions. A product that covers 400 square feet per the manufacturer’s claim but only delivers 2 ACH in that room will have that context provided clearly.
Filter Grade and Seal Verification. We check filtration claims in manufacturer technical documentation — the product manual, not the product listing title — and look for explicit H13 designation or equivalent performance claims at the MPPS particle size. We also look for evidence of filter-to-housing seal integrity, because a perfect H13 filter installed with a seal gap bypasses filtration entirely. Owner reviews frequently surface seal problems that do not appear in any technical documentation.
Owner Review Analysis. We analyze a minimum of 200 owner reviews per product on Amazon and major retailers, weighting long-term reviews (6+ months of use) more heavily than initial impressions. We look for patterns that predict long-term reliability: recurring noise complaints (indicating motor or blade issues), filter seal problems (indicating design defects in the filter housing), performance degradation over time (indicating filter quality decline), and customer service issues (relevant to warranty and support decisions). We record specific complaint frequencies as percentages, not anecdotal mentions.
Five-Year Cost Modeling. Every product in our database includes a 5-year total cost of ownership calculation: purchase price + (annual filter cost × 5) + estimated annual electricity cost at continuous operation. This calculation frequently reverses the apparent value ranking of products. A unit that appears affordable at purchase may have filter replacement costs that make it the most expensive option over five years. We present both the purchase price and the 5-year cost on product pages so readers can make fully informed comparisons.
Noise Level Verification. We cross-reference manufacturer noise claims against owner review data and independent measurement reports where available. We note the fan speed at which noise measurements were taken — a product claiming “quiet operation at 22 dB” may be measuring at its lowest fan speed, which may be insufficient to meet our recommended ACH for the target room. We specify noise at the fan speed needed to achieve 4–5 ACH in each room size category.
Content Review Cycle
Air purifier technology, pricing, and availability changes continuously. A recommendation that was accurate in early 2025 may not reflect a product that has received a firmware update, filter redesign, or significant price change. Our content review process is structured to catch these changes before they mislead readers.
Ongoing monitoring: We monitor AHAM database updates on a monthly basis. When a product’s verified CADR changes — which can happen if a manufacturer submits updated test data or if a product is removed from the directory — we update the relevant pages within 30 days. Significant price changes (above 20% from the last recorded price) trigger a review of the 5-year cost calculations on affected pages.
Annual full review cycle: Every product page and buying guide undergoes a full editorial review annually. This includes re-checking all specifications, recalculating 5-year costs at current filter prices, re-analyzing owner reviews for new patterns, and reassessing the recommendation in context of new entrants to the market. The last-updated date at the top of each page reflects the most recent full review cycle, not merely minor copy edits.
Model discontinuation: When a manufacturer discontinues a product, we update or archive the relevant page within 60 days of confirmed discontinuation. We do not leave discontinued product recommendations live purely because they continue to generate affiliate revenue. If the best successor model is a different brand, we say so.
Revision triggers beyond the annual cycle: We revise content outside the annual cycle when: a new independent test report contradicts our documented performance claims; a manufacturer recall or safety notice affects a featured product; significant negative owner review patterns emerge (e.g., a product failure rate spike after a specific production run); or a regulatory agency action affects a product’s certification status.
The goal of our review cycle is simple: every page on PurifierBeast should reflect the current state of the market, not the state of the market when the page was originally written. Outdated content that misleads buyers is a failure of editorial responsibility, not a neutral act.
Why We Built PurifierBeast
PurifierBeast exists because the air purifier market is genuinely difficult to navigate honestly, and the consequences of making a poor buying decision are not trivial for the people who most need a well-performing purifier.
Consider what a buyer with severe cat allergies faces: hundreds of products on Amazon, most claiming some variant of “True HEPA,” many with fabricated or unverified CADR numbers, some with HEPA-type filters that provide materially worse filtration than genuine H13, and almost none making it easy to find the actual AHAM-verified performance data that would allow apples-to-apples comparison. A buyer who trusts the product title and the first-page Amazon rating will often end up with a unit that underperforms their needs. For an allergy sufferer, that means continued symptoms. For an asthma patient, it may mean continued medication use that a well-chosen purifier could have reduced.
We built PurifierBeast because we were frustrated by the existing coverage landscape. Most air purifier review sites either affiliate-optimize their rankings (highest commission products rank highest regardless of performance) or produce generic content that repeats manufacturer claims without verification. We found it consistently difficult to determine, from published review sites, what a given purifier’s AHAM-verified CADR actually was, what HEPA grade the filter met, and what the realistic annual filter cost was — three pieces of information that should be the basis of any air purifier recommendation.
Our approach is deliberately narrow. We cover residential and small-office air purifiers. We do not cover commercial systems, HVAC installations, or air quality monitors beyond what is directly relevant to selecting an air purifier. We go deep on a manageable scope rather than broad on an unmanageable one.
The Beast Score system — our composite rating metric — was built to make the trade-offs explicit. CADR and filter grade are weighted most heavily because they determine whether the unit actually performs its core function. Noise, energy efficiency, and filter cost are weighted because they determine whether you will actually use the unit long-term at the fan speed needed to hit adequate ACH. A unit you turn off because it is too loud, or a unit with filter costs so high you skip replacements, does not improve your air quality regardless of its rated CADR.
We are not neutral on the question of whether air purifiers work. Properly selected and properly sized H13 HEPA air purifiers, run continuously in appropriate rooms, measurably improve indoor air quality and reduce allergen concentrations. The evidence is solid. What we are neutral on is which brand best provides that performance for a given room and budget — and that is what PurifierBeast is designed to answer honestly.
