Room Selection — The Most Important Decision
Place the purifier in the room where occupants spend the most cumulative hours. For most households, this is the primary bedroom — 7–8 hours of sleep in a closed room means bedroom air quality has the most impact on daily inhaled dose. Running a purifier in the living room while sleeping in an unpurified bedroom means the highest-exposure period is unprotected. For allergy or asthma sufferers, bedroom placement is the highest priority. For pet dander management, place in the room where the pet sleeps. For cooking odor management, the kitchen or adjacent dining room is the target.
Position Within the Room
Place the purifier 1–2 feet away from walls on all sides. Airflow restriction from walls reduces the effective intake volume and slows the air change rate. For cylinder-style purifiers with 360-degree intake (Levoit Core series, Coway Mighty), center-room placement is ideal — corner placement reduces effective intake to 25% of the cylinder's circumference. This is more effective than room-center placement when there is a known point source. For diffuse pollutants (allergens, general dust), center-of-room or central-wall placement with clear intake paths is appropriate.
First-Time Setup — Step by Step
Setting up a new air purifier correctly prevents the most common first-use errors and ensures the unit performs to its specification from day one.
Step 1 — Remove All Packaging From the Filter
This is the most common first-use error. The filter inside most new air purifiers is wrapped in plastic or paper packaging to protect the filter medium during shipping.
